A new blown film winder from Addex Inc., Stoughton, Mass., uses a cutover with a serrated knife that comes up out of a long slot in the lay-on drum and shoots sideways, making a clean cut. The patented drum creates electrostatic charge for just a few seconds to hold the film firmly in place while it's being cut. The static charge and straight cut "eliminates any possible fold-over of the film at the beginning of the roll," Addex notes. Another advantage of cutting and pinning on the lay-on drum is to allow reverse winding simply by rethreading the web the other way around the roll. Addex built the first winder with the new cutover last year and is building the second now.
