Two new impact- and heat-resistant ABS grades for automotive interiors come from Lanxess Corp., Pittsburgh. Lustran Ultra 4105 offers heat resistance to 103 C (217 F), which is considerably higher than that of standard ABS and slightly lower than typical PC/ABS. Izod impact of 42 kJ/m2 at room temperature is similar to that of standard PC/ABS. The material is aimed at glove boxes, glove-box doors, door panels, center console components, and knee bolsters on the driver’s side. Another potential application is mobile-phone housings. Another grade, Lustran Ultra 4115, has high impact strength and heat resistance of 116 C (241 F), which is comparable to that of standard PC/ABS. It is suited for post finishers, interior door handles, air vents, and defroster strips.
