WEB EXCLUSIVE: The first European production of polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymer went on stream last month at a pilot plant of Futerro, the 50/50 joint venture of Total Petrochemicals and Galactic, both of Brussels, Belgium. The venture was established in September 2007. The 3.3-million-lb/yr plant is near Tournai, Belgium. Unlike U.S. production of PLA by NatureWorks LLC, Minnetonka, Minn., which is based on corn, Futerro’s feedstock is mainly sugar beets. +32 (0) 69 45 22 76 • futerro.com
