A partially crosslinked, chlorinated olefinic TPE is finding use in extrusion coating on fabric. One of the first such applications of Alcryn Melt-Processible Rubber from Advanced Polymer Alloys, Wilmington, Del., is on a polyester fabric for a portable “wash pad,” a basin that collects wastewater from car and truck cleaning operations. The WashMan is made by Morclean Ltd. in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, U.K. Alcryn-coated fabric is said to be less costly than silicone- or urethane-coated fabrics and resistant to cleaning chemicals and long-term weathering. Another benefit is the material’s weldability, allowing for large calendered sheet to be cut and fitted on-site. Alcryn reportedly also permits a broader color selection than competitive materials.
