A recent agreement between Davis-Standard Film Systems, Bridgewater, N.J., and K Design GmbH in Germany makes the COM 3 Triple Lip Air Ring available to blown film processors in the U.S. and Canada. Davis-Standard is the exclusive North American OEM supplier. The Triple Lip reportedly reduces start-up time, investment cost, and energy usage. It also raises cooling and output rates by as much as 30% to 50%.

Compared with other stacked air rings, the Triple Lip reportedly provides fast gauge control through manipulation of all three airstreams. Using this ring with a modified version of the DS Vertex die is said to lead to especially high cooling rates and superior film quality. Unlike other air rings in its class, the Triple Lip requires only one air ring, blower, and chiller instead of two and has a unique counter-cooling concept along the high stalk, plus an easily operated elevator system to make adjustments. This technology enables a wider production range and improved outputs with BURs of 2.0:1 to 4.4:1. Studies show excellent thickness control that allows runs closer to minimum targets. Maintenance is easier with reduced wax and oil contamination on the air-ring lips.

Davis-Standard is integrating the Triple Ring control software into its Integrator control system and the Triple Lip is available for testing on a pilot line in Bridgewater.
