A new concept is said to simplify feeding large numbers of extruders with many different materials in highly layered cast and blown film lines. The system is said to make it almost impossible to send the wrong material to the wrong destination. Instead of banks of individual feed pipes connecting each material silo directly to seven or nine extruders, CRG Logics Inc., Green Bay, Wis., connects each silo to a wall-mounted Smart Connect Stand for each extruder. The Smart Stand sequences the vacuum pumps and valves to feed the correct materials for a particular recipe to the extruder, reducing the amount of piping and vacuum usage. Programming is fl exible and can be set up to override an operator error that contradicts the stored recipe-or simply give the operator an error message. Other benefi ts include fast material changes because dedicated lines to silos don't need cleanout, plus energy savings from use of a variable-speed drive on the vacuum pump, which can run faster or slower according to the line diameter for each silo and Gaylord run.
