Gearless, synchronous, permanent-magnet torque motors have at least two advantages for wire and cable extruders-energy efficiency and quiet operation. But in the case of Reifenhauser's patented REItorque extruders, there's a third benefit to these motors. Because Reifenhauser mounts the drive shaft through the middle of the hollow motor, screws can be pulled out the back of the machine in under 10 min vs. an hour or more to pull a screw the usual way from the die end. A 10-min change makes it practical to buy multiple screws to maximize output of each polymer-e.g., PVC, PE, and fluoropolymers-and to permit quick color changes, wasting less of today's high-priced resins. Gearless REItorque extruders come in 25 to 90 mm diam. and 25:1 or 30:1 L/D. Reifenhauser, with U.S. offices in Ipswich, Mass., exhibited a 50-mm REItorque extruder with newly developed anti-corrosive screws and barrels at the spring Wire/Tube 2006 show in Dusseldorf, Germany. More than 40 gearless REItorque extruders are extruding wire and cable, though none yet in North America.
