A new oxygen-transmission analyzer has been designed to double testing speeds in order to accommodate the high output of the Actis 48 barrier-coating system for PET bottles from Sidel Inc., Norcross, Ga. The Actis machine's output of more than 30,000 bottles/hr is said to overwhelm other barrier-testing systems. The Systech 8700 analyzer was developed by Sidel and Systech Instruments Ltd. of the U.K. It measures O2 transmission in 12 hr instead of the usual 24 hr and takes up to 11 samples at a time, yet requires only half the space of other instruments. It also uses nitrogen as an inexpensive carrier rather than a nitrogen/hydrogen mix. Systech is represented by Illinois Instruments Inc., Johnsburg, Ill.
