WEB EXCLUSIVE: Injection molding, thermoforming, and other machines that require high-speed position sensing can benefit from a new faster update option for magnetostrictive Temposonics linear position sensors from MTS Systems Corp.’s Sensors Div., Cary, N.C. This feature allows for updated measurements every 100 millisec, so the controller can read the absolute position values with an update frequency of up to 10 kHz, independent of measuring length. The typical update rate for non-contact magnetostrictive devices is based on the stroke length of the sensor—e.g., it would typically be 2.3 kHz for a 1-meter sensor or 3.7 kHz for a 300-mm sensor. MTS can now provide up to 10 kHz for all stroke lengths, said to be the fastest rate available for these sensors. The new feature is available for controllers with SSI or Ethercat network interfaces. According to MTS sources, Husky Injection Molding Systems, Ltd., Bolton, Ont., has reported that the faster update rates enabled significant material savings.
