With resin prices where they are, no pellet should be wasted. Diamond America Corp., Tallmadge, Ohio, makes sure that pellets aren’t spilled whenever the material flow from the hopper is shut off. Diamond builds the feed throat to its extruders with a second small discharge channel into the extruder. When the slide plate closes to cut off flow from the hopper, material displaced by the gate typically falls outside the extruder. But with this “spill-proof” gate, those pellets fall into a second small passage to the extruder screw. The feature is standard on all Diamond America extruders.
