A family of fine and ultra-fine styrene-butadiene rubber tougheners derived from recycled tires is available from a new supplier formed earlier this year. Lehigh Technologies LLC, Naples, Fla., offers PolyDyne SBR in standard particle sizes of 75, 106, and 108 microns as well as customized grades. They are designed for compounding TPEs, TPVs, TPOs, and glass-reinforced compounds. Typical use levels are 10% to 40%. These powders look and feel like carbon black. They are said to offer significant cost advantages and performance improvements over competing natural and synthetic grades. The company can produce over 100 million lb/yr of these powders at its first facility in Tucker, Ga. Two new facilities, each with similar capacity, are scheduled for start-up in 2007 and 2008. Pellet versions are also planned.
