Tetra Pak in Lausanne, Switzerland (U.S. headquarters in Vernon Hills, Ill.) recently launched what it calls the world’s first microwavable aseptic package for sauces. The pouches are made of a monolayer PET barrier film with a silicon-oxide coating and are ultrasonically sealed. The Tetra Wedge Aseptic (TWA) package competes with stand-up pouches. Its barrier is said to be effective for high- and low-acid foods and protects without refrigeration or preservatives for six months. A limited rollout started in March in North America and parts of Europe. TWA is made at 6000 packages/hr on a special Tetra Pak filling machine.
