A new polypropylene honeycomb core from Plascore Inc., Zeeland, Mich., is reportedly the first one suitable for closed molding processes like vacuum infusion, light RTM, and vacuum-bag molding. The thermoplastic core is covered on both sides by a proprietary composite surfacing material that prevents the open cells from filling with resin, unlike other honeycomb cores. Potential weight savings of 10% to 15% are reported versus balsa and crosslinked PVC foam cores. In addition, there are significant cost savings because less resin is used for wet-out.
