The first profiles made of Topas cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) were extruded last January by Ensinger-Hyde, Washington, Pa., using five different grades of COC from Topas Advanced Polymers (formerly part of Ticona), Florence, Ky. Ensinger, which worked two years on this development, made samples of stock rods in 1- to 5-in. diam. and 1-in.-thick plates for distributor Boedeker Plastics Inc., Shiner, Texas. These stock shapes are intended for machining prototypes of injection molded optical, electrical, and medical parts. Extruding the material into large profiles was done with a standard extrusion process using care to retain the material's clarity and prevent voids.
