New oxidative surface treatment with reactive fl uorine gas is the fi rst such treatment for wood/plastic composites that allows them to be painted or coated, says Inhance/Fluoro-Seal in Houston. Other treatments like corona discharge, fl ame, and plasma don't work on WPCs because lignin in the wood is an antioxidant. But rapid fl uoro-oxidation overcomes the lignin and doesn't fade because it causes a small amount of surface crosslinking. Inhance/Fluoro-Seal developed the treatment in collaboration with Strandex Corp. in Madison, Wis., and will present it along with a novel uvcurable, 100%-solids clear coat for WPCs at the Federation of Societies for Coating Technologies (FSCT) conference on Coating Wood and Wood Composites, July 23 to 25 in Seattle. The coating comes from Finishes Unlimited in Sugar Grove, Ill. UV coatings cure in seconds, so they're good for deck and rail profi les, which require four-sided coating. Fluoro-oxidation plus the clear coat reportedly can give WPC boards 10- to 15-yr weatherability. FSCT: (610) 940-0770/www.coatingstech.org . Inhance/Fluoro-Seal: (513) 683-4667/www.inhance.us .
