Bayer MaterialScience, Pittsburgh, has developed a new line of “eco-compliant” flame-retardant PC/polyester blends that contain no brominated or chlorinated FR additives or heavy metals. These unfilled grades boast an excellent balance of flame resistance, toughness, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability. Makroblend DP EC100 is rated UL94 V-0/5VA at 3 mm thickness and is being evaluated at 2 mm. Makroblend DP EC150 is rated V-0 at 0.75 mm and 5VA at 2.3 mm. EC150 also offers low smoke density and good FAR25.853a test performance for aircraft uses. Both grades are aimed at electrical/electronics and IT applications requiring improved fire resistance and compliance with global environmental standards. UV-stabilized versions are available for outdoor uses such as electrical enclosures. The Makroblend EC family has received Blue Angel certification and is complaint with EU Restriction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronics Equipment (WEEE) directives.
