New software, developed and offered for free by K-Tron International, Pitman, N.J., will analyze and optimize the amount of expensive additives a compounder uses. The compounder enters the recipe proportions, cost per ingredient, and the feeder setpoint tolerance range. The latter is based on both quality requirements and feeder accuracy. K-Tron’s FeedSmart Optimizer Tool then analyzes where more of an inexpensive ingredient and less of an expensive one can be used within the tolerances of the formula and equipment. K-Tron spent 10 months developing the optimization package based on Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Along with saving compounders money by not overfeeding costly additives, K-Tron hopes it will also show up the inaccuracy of competing feeder brands.
