New color masterbatches give a frosted-glass look to PET bottles for cosmetics, alcoholic beverages, and other high-end consumer goods. Developed by Ampacet Corp., Tarrytown, N.Y., 603121-PT and 603122-PT masterbatches also can be used in thermoformed containers. Ampacet estimates that plastic bottles with a moldedin frosted look cost at least 90% less than bottles with the frost spray-painted on. And because the color is distributed throughout the wall, it cannot be scraped off. Grade 603121, which requires more stretch to activate its lightdiffusion properties, provides a whiter frosted effect, whereas 603122 provides a more neutral gray effect. Bottles' appearance can range from translucent to opaque. Intensity of the frosted effect depends on the letdown ratio, which is typically between 1% and 5%. These masterbatches can also be tinted to create effects like the soft blue and green tones of vintage glass. They also allow the use of pearlescent and other special-effect pigments, which can enhance the frosted look without the streaking, pin holes, and other issues often associated with such pigments in PET. Both grades are formulated with Ampacet's new PET carrier and its proprietary Formula X PET binder system, which is said to eliminate predrying, so it can go directly from storage to machine. Early commercial trials reportedly show a dramatic decrease in slippage as well as static build-up. These masterbatches can also be formulated for PC and acrylic.
