A new water-resistant, hand-held closure testing device measures the application and removal torques of closures at the bottle filling line. Because the new device mechanically grips the closure, it is said to eliminate operator variability associated with standard laboratory benchtop torque instruments, known as slab testers. Unveiled at NPE 2006 by Plastic Technologies, Inc. (PTI) of Holland, Ohio, TorqTraQ is suitable for shop-floor quality control in which the device is brought to the bottles instead of the other way around. Interchangeable chucks handle closures from 15 to 43 mm diam. Special chucks test push-pull closures for sports drinks and water bottles. Introductory price is $1295, comparable to slab testers.
