What’s said to be the first fully self-contained instrument for non-destructive testing of a part’s surface condition on the shop floor is available from Brighton Technologies Group, Inc., Cincinnati. The SA1001 Surface Analyst quickly and easily tests whether a surface is ready to accept painting, printing, or adhesive bonding. It is suited to process control since it’s engineered for shop-floor use as well as problem-solving and R&D applications, according to business development manager Lucas Dillingham. In automotive, Surface Analyst is proving its mettle in ensuring the quality and consistency of paint adhesion to injection molded instrument panels, bumper fascia, fenders, and other parts made from TPOs or other impact-modified olefinic compounds.

 

This l-lb, handheld, surface-tension measurement tool has a head that rotates 180° for hard-to-access locations. It can determine the wetting properties of a surface and provide a number that correlates directly to cleanliness, treatment level, and adhesion of a surface within 3 sec, vs. 5 to 30 min for typical destructive testing with dyne ink-contact-angle measurement techniques. It works by depositing a droplet of liquid and measuring the contact angel. “How much a droplet of water spreads or beads-up gives you a good idea of how chemically reactive the part surface is for determining its readiness for coating or other finishing processes,” says Dillingham.
