An ultra-high-barrier HDPE resin is designed for use in film structures where moisture barrier and stiffness are important. HPs167-AB (0.966 g/ cc, 1.2 MI) is the latest addition to the Surpass family of high-performance polyethylenes produced with the Advanced Sclairtech single-site catalyst technology of Nova Chemicals, Pittsburgh. This HDPE reportedly offers up to 50% higher moisture barrier than existing resins. The 1% secant modulus of 1.5-mil film is 158,540 psi MD/196,630 psi TD. Moisture transmission is 0.072 g/100 in.2/day. Nova sources say the new resin allows downgauging without sacrifi cing performance—or retaining the same film gauge and increasing barrier and stiffness. It’s aimed at cereal and snack liners and packaging for meats, cheeses, ready-to-eat meals, pet foods, soaps, printer cartridges, potting soil, and other lawn/garden applications, as well as fumigation films.
