A family of “heavyweight” compounds offers an alternative to metal in personal-care applications where the heft of metal is desirable. Newly available from Clariant Masterbatches Specialty Compounding Div., McHenry, Ill., these products are aimed at bottle tops, lipstick tubes, or compact cases. The specific gravity of these compounds can be varied from as low as 1.5 (similar to plaster of Paris or ceramic) to 11 (like lead). Materials like tungsten, barium sulfate, and bismuth are used to impart metallic qualities to polyolefins, PVC, ABS, nylon, and other engineering plastics. Many of these formulations also can be custom colored. (815) 363-0025 • www.clariant. masterbatches.com
