A special injection molding grade of HDPE, specifically designed for PE100 pressure-pipe fittings for gas and water, is said to be a better alternative to the extrusion grades currently used. New Borstar HE3490-IM from Borealis Compounds LLC, Port Murray, N.J., is a hexene-based HDPE copolymer that is said to combine the higher pressure performance of a PE100 material with the processing friendliness of a PE80 material. According to Borealis, this grade can be injected at lower temperatures than conventional PE100 extrusion grades, which reportedly allows considerably shorter cycle times. Substantial improvements in mechanical properties also are claimed for critical areas of small, complex fittings such as intersections and flow-front interfaces. Trials reportedly show that scrap rates can be reduced dramatically on fittings with intricate design. Also, the easy flow of HE3490-IM is said to greatly improve the surface quality of fittings.
