A new line of TPEs from GLS Corp., McHenry, Ill., boasts more than 10 times the oxygen barrier of conventional TPEs, making it thereby equivalent to thermoset butyl rubber for healthcare packaging and delivery systems. The TPE alloy is aimed at vial stoppers, I.V. bags, and bloodcollection tubes. The TPEs are said to be "cleaner" than thermosets that contain halogens and heavy metals. In drug-contact applications, GLS claims the new TPEs are very inert and show low levels of extractables and leachables, complying with Japanese Pharmacopeia Chapter 59. The products can be overmolded onto polyolefi ns. One of the fi rst commercial applications is a DNA storage vial. Tel: (815) 3858500 . www.glscorp.com
