New electronic controls on the latest low-cost Thermolator hot-water mold-temperature control units (TCUs) from Conair, Pittsburgh, combine temperature indication with the user-friendly features of PLCs. The new hybrid controls are said to be a significant technical advance over previous entry-level controls, but they cost less and are easier to install, which helps keep the price of the new basic Thermolator units at $1370. Four pushbuttons enable all set-up, operating, and troubleshooting functions. Large LEDs show set and actual temperatures to and from process. The TCU can control the process from either of these inputs, as well as the average of “to-process” and “from-process” readings. Such features are normally found only on top-of-the-line controls.

Other high-end features include automatic vent sequencing and timers to interrupt alarms during troubleshooting. While other low-cost TCUs have a single light to indicate an unspecified alarm condition, Conair’s new controls display an alphabetic code.
