The National Composite Center (NCC), Kettering, Ohio, has named Composites One of Arlington Heights, Ill., to be sole distributor of NCC’s Rapid Fiber Preforming technology in North America. NCC will supply the preforms and provide application development for Composites One customers along with technical support for Composites One sales and service representatives.

NCC was funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Dept. of Energy to help produce composite pick-up truck boxes using Owens Corning’s automated P4 system (Programmable Powder Preform Process). NCC adapted the technology to produce complex shapes with carbon fibers at significant cost reductions for the Air Force. NCC then applied P4 to commercial applications, where it eliminates woven fabric or mats and the labor of hand lay-up while also reducing scrap. Rapid Fiber Preforming creates near-net-shape preforms of nearly any size. Its speed and ability to place fibers more uniformly reportedly offers flexibility to customize preforms at dramatically lower cost.
