A pilot-scale co-rotating twin-screw compounding line for biopolymers is scheduled to start up later this year at Reimelt-Henschel MischSysteme GmbH in Germany. It has a special low-shear screw design without kneading blocks and with higher free volume (over 1.62 OD/ID ratio vs. the typical 1.5 to 1.6). Special mixing elements create backflow with very gentle mixing, which yields energy savings of up to 30%, Reimelt says. The low-shear design is based on technology acquired when Reimelt took over Rockstedt Compoundiertechnik in 2005. The RHC biopolymer compounder is available in six sizes from 25 to 120 mm diam. and L/D up to 64:1. The pilot line is 55 mm diam. Reimelt has a U.S. office in Odessa, Fla., but the biopolymer compounder isn’t yet available here. Tel: (813) 920-7434 • www.reimelt.com
