A new line of color and additive concentrates for wood-plastic composites (WPCs) boasts excellent color distribution, improved feeding accuracy, and lower coloring cost. OnColor WPC from PolyOne Corp., Avon, Lake, Ohio, has much higher pigment loading-75% to 89% vs. the usual 40%. Use levels are 1% to 3% compared with the standard 4% to 6%. These concentrates are aimed at HDPE and PP products like fencing, decking, railings, and window and door frames. A patent is pending on the concentrates' unique carrier and physical form-small beads that are said to ensure better incorporation and distribution. The patent also covers the type of pigments used-inorganics with various surface treatments that reportedly improve weatherability. These pigments have been used by PolyOne in PVC siding, where they reportedly show excellent weatherability. PolyOne also offers custom masterbatches with color plus compatibilizer and/or lubricant. The company also recently added the capability to extrude smaller WPC products in its lab for customer color matching and approval rather than providing only standard injection molded chips.
