A new high-pressure hydraulic power system is said to improve energy efficiency and process control in injection molding machines. The Unigy PhD hydraulic power package from Kadant AES div. of Kadant Inc., Queensbury, N.Y., comprises a fixed-displacement pump, servo motor, and pump-modeling hydraulic drive. It employs intelligent pump-control software to produce precise flow rates and pressures by sensing application demand and energizing the pump only as required. This is said to reduce energy consumption and noise. The servo-controlled system employs a torque-regulating drive controller powered by a 100-MHz digital signal processor for faster response and precise pump control. It can compensate in real time for non-linear conditions such as fluid compression, pump slip, fluctuating flow resistance and windage, as well as viscous and coulomb losses.
