A new infrared-absorbing polycarbonate sheet from GE Plastics, Pittsfield, Mass., is said to reduce interior heat buildup by up to 40%. Lexan Solar Control IR PC sheet also offers up to 60% more visible light transmission than other plastic IR-absorbent glazing. One of its first applications is escalator enclosures at the Arena Stadium in Amsterdam. Until now, GE says the only options for IR absorption in plastics were a screen-printed coating or a coextruded layer on one side of the sheet to absorb IR energy. But these methods reportedly made the glazing translucent or even opaque. The new sheet contains additives that provide permanent IR protection, unlike coatings, which can be damaged. The sheet also has uv protection on both sides.
