INJECTION MOLDING: Weekly Timer Starts Presses Up Automatically, Saving Energy

Save time and energy by preheating machines just in time for production.

A new control function from KraussMaffei (U.S. office in Florence, Ky.) allows molders to preset startup times for a machine over the course of a week. It ensures that machines will be ready when needed and prevents unnecessary machine waiting times, thereby saving significant expense in wasted energy.

The new Weekly Timer is now standard in KM’s MC6 control system. The MC6 “learns” how long a machine takes to heat up and even responds to changing ambient temperature or installation of a new plasticating unit. It thereby simplifies the task for the operator by eliminating any need for calculations.

KM describes Weekly Timer as an example of how the goal of Industry 4.0—complete networking of all processes in production—can be implemented using intelligent machines. KM has its own name for this concept: “Plastics 4.0.”
