A new in-line inspection device called PETView from Krones Inc., Franklin, Wis., monitors the quality of blow molded PET containers before they exit the machine, and any defects are immediately transmitted to a closed-loop temperature controller for correction. The system is for use with Krones’ Contiform S or H series stretch-blow machines. PETView consists of three modules. One module checks the base for soiling, damage, opacity, and thickness plus the position and size of the injection gate. The neck finish-module monitors defects in surface quality and mouth ovality that might prevent closures from being applied. The final module performs sidewall inspection for soiling, opacity, creasing, and contour. The number of defective containers is statistically recorded and analyzed, ensuring continual updating of the closed-loop blowing process. PETView can inspect up to 72,000 containers/hr.
