A new alternative to welding a 3-mm overlay of tungsten carbide onto twinscrew elements for abrasion resistance is brazing a 1-mm layer of tungsten-carbide-loaded cloth. Conforma Clad in New Albany, Ind., developed the fi rst fabric-clad elements in 2005 with Coperion Corp., Ramsey, N.J., for a customer using a ZSK twin-screw compounder processing 50% glassfi lled material. Fabric cladding reportedly wears more uniformly and is less expensive because the brazed coating comes out smoother than a conventional welded overlay, which requires substantial machining. Conforma Clad offers tungsten carbide cladding only through machinery OEMs and only on elements with fl ight rims at least 3/16 in. wide, corresponding to extruders larger than 83 mm diam.
