A new PET resin that has an FDA-approved uv absorber bound into the polymer chain is designed for consistent quality in cosmetic and personal-care packaging. Vitiva PET from the Voridian Div. of Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn., combines the crystal clarity of PET with protection against uv degradation of delicate dyes, vitamins, and aroma compounds in shampoos, body washes, and facial astringents. Vitiva reportedly blocks virtually all uv light up to 370 nm, extending shelf-life and product integrity. Because the uv inhibitor is bound into the resin, it reportedly produces no plateout on molds or dryers.
