A new low-density shrink film for sleeve labels is claimed to be the industry's only decorative solution for PET bottles that is recyclable. PETsleeve from France's Sleever International has been endorsed by four leading waste-collection and recycling companies in Europe and Australia. Sleever (which has an office in Mississauga, Ont.) declined to describe the composition of the new film except to say that its density is less than 1 g/cc, compared with an average of 1.3 for PET. This allows gravity separation of the sleeve from the container and allows 100% of both the PET bottle resin and the sleeve to be reclaimed. It can be used with steam and hot-air shrinking machines at speeds between 15,000 and 30,000 bottles/hr. The recyclable sleeve is used on bottles for fresh juice and energy drinks.
