A new line of microscope-based welding systems for mold repair cuts tool-replacement costs by creating longer lasting welds with less rework. The new Microwelding System from NovaTech Inc., Smithfield, R.I., has a magnifying lens and lighting to show exactly where a weld puddle is applied during micro-repairs. Also, this low-amperage system welds at lower temperature than conventional TIG welds and creates less than 0.0005-in. sink in the weld zone. That reportedly means less rework. Systems cost from $4000 to $40,000.
