German machine builder Reifenhauser GmbH has begun offering in North America and Europe a three-layer blown film line assembled in China. It is reportedly identical to its German-built counterpart but costs roughly 30% less. Reifenhauser (with U.S. offices in Ipswich, Mass.) set up its Chinese assembly plant in 2003 to build the Filmtech 3.1700 film line with 60-in. layflat, 12- to 16-in. die, three extruders of 60 to 70 mm diam., Reicoflow-2 automatic gauge control, Siemens controls, and SFA-2 surface winder. Winder, die, barrels, and screws are all made in Germany. Towers, base frames, and haul-off are built in China, where the whole is assembled. The first five of Reifenhauser’s Chinese built lines are installed in Asian plants.
