Milacron Inc., Batavia, Ohio, is now the exclusive supplier to the plastics industry in the Americas of the unusual barrel heating/cooling technology developed by Rex Materials, Inc., Fowlerville, Mich. As we reported in January, the Rex Thermal Control Solution (TCS) is a lightweight shell of ceramic-fiber insulation with embedded radiant heaters. It encloses the barrel of a machine while leaving an air gap between the barrel and the insulation for forced-air cooling by means of fans attached to the insulation. In the last three years, this system has replaced heater bands on more than 100 injection and blow molding machines and extruders. Energy savings of 30% to 50% or more have been documented with payback as quick as 18 months. It is now available from Milacron on all new injection and blow molding presses and extruders and is also offered for retrofit as the Servtek TCS from Milacron’s Servtek aftermarket business unit. Besides energy savings, benefits include up to 55% faster heat-up and cool-down, owing to lower thermal mass than band heaters; safe operation because the exterior of the insulation is cool to the touch; easy installation; and longer life than most heater bands. Control of the TCS has been integrated into Milacron’s machine controls. (513) 536-2000 • www.milacron.com
