Two companies recently came out with new injection machine shut-off nozzles. Herzog Injection Technology Inc., Essex, Mass., has a new series of spring-loaded needle-valve nozzles for micromolding with screws of 10 to 18 mm diam. Pressure of 180 bar (2600 psi) opens the nozzle, which is held closed by dual springs outside the melt channel. Herzog also offers a new BHP-type pneumatic or hydraulically driven Bolt shut-off nozzle designed to handle pressures up to 3000 bar (13,500 psi) and temperatures up to 750 F. It provides fast shutoff and shorter cycle times while preventing streaking and memory effects and material leakage.
Meanwhile, Osco Inc., Rochester Hills, Mich., introduced its Machine Shut Off (MSO) nozzle that’s said to provide positive gate opening and shut-off, eliminates drooling caused by backpressure, and improves cycle times through quicker recovery. The MSO fits on any machine and has standard, gas-assist, or optional tip designs in a choice of four tip radii. The MSO nozzle is driven pneumatically or hydraulically.
