A new additive masterbatch for LDPE, LLDPE, and EVA removes taste- and odor-causing molecules from food-packaging films, trash bags, extrusion coatings, pipe, molded containers, and beverage caps. Masterbatch 101787 from Ampacet Corp., Tarrytown, N.Y., contains high-surface-area zeolites that are highly porous and preferentially adsorb smaller, odor-causing molecules, especially ammonium-based and polar compounds. Since it is moderately hydrophobic, it is said to readily remove organic and inorganic compounds in the presence of water. The additive entraps offensive compounds originating inside or outside a package or in the resin itself. It's typically used at 3% to 5% letdown ratios.
