WEB EXCLUSIVE: FkuR Plastics Corp., Cedar Park, Texas, a newly established office of a German supplier of biodegradable polymers, is offering Biograde cellulose acetate blends with higher heat resistance than most of today’s biopolymers. Based primarily on wood, they were created as biodegradable alternatives to polystyrene and have similar mechanical properties. These materials differ from familiar cellulose acetate resins in that they are biodegradable and some are certified compostable. They contain biodegradable glycerol-based plasticizers. Three Biograde resins are offered. Biograde C 7500 CL is a clear injection molding resin with heat resistance (Vicat A temperature) of 111 C/232 F. Compostability testing is still under way. Biograde C 9550 is an opaque white, mineral-filled compound with higher heat resistance (Vicat A of 115 C/239 F) and stiffness (but lower toughness) and certified compostability.
