WEB EXCLUSIVE: BASF has expanded its line of biodegradable resins with a grade for agricultural films. New Ecovio F Mulch is a blend of PLA biobased plastic and BASF’s Ecoflex biodegradable polyester (non-biobased). BASF (U.S. office in Wyandotte, Mich.) has offered Ecoflex F Mulch for years, which compounders have mixed with other materials to produce individualized formulations for agricultural customers. New Ecovio F Mulch requires no further compounding. It produces film that can be as thin as 10 μm without tearing or puncturing when placed on the field by machine. Conventional PE mulch film is usually at least twice as thick. And because it is biodegradable, Ecovio mulch film can be left in the field after the harvest and plowed under, rather than gathered up for disposal or recycling.
