WEB EXCLUSIVE: It’s not every day that you hear about a new development in PVC resins, but PolyOne Corp., Cleveland, has announced what it calls a “breakthrough development in formulating vinyl plastisols.” New Geon FIT (Formulation Improvement Tool) homopolymer resins are said to improve rheological characteristics and enhance air release of plastisols for better processing. Further, these new resins control viscosity aging and surface characteristics without the mechanical property loss typical of standard plastisols that use blending resins. Geon FIT resins reportedly improve mechanical properties by 10% to 30% compared with standard blending resins. And they allow plastisol formulators to increase filler content substantially without sacrificing physical properties, allowing significant cost savings. Three grades (low, medium, and high molecular weight) are available for plastisol applications of 4 mils (100 microns) or greater thickness.

In failure analysis, there is a tendency to gravitate to a few common test protocols. But this approach can result in a mismatch of techniques to the problem.
