WEB EXCLUSIVE: A new flame-retardant polycarbonate for LED lenses and covers allows these parts to be molded thinner than ever. New Makrolon FR7067 from Bayer MaterialScience LLC, Pittsburgh, meets UL 94V-0 at 1.5 mm thickness, while most PCs meet this rating at 3 mm. This new grade also offers light transmission of nearly 90%. Thinner lenses are lighter, less costly (due to material savings), and are more efficient because of higher light transmission. Another benefit is that when a lens meets required UL flame ratings, the OEM can avoid costly power-supply isolation or a separate UL test on he final component, according to Bayer. This UV-stabilized grade also meets UL 8750 safety guidelines for non-class 2 and direct-connected LED lighting. Makrolon FR7067 is used in new Borealis-brand LED lamps from PolyBrite International, Inc., Naperville, Ill.
