WEB EXCLUSIVE: Metabolix Inc., Cambridge, Mass., has come out with a new compostable film grade of PHA biopolymer, Mvera B5008, which is certified compostable by European standards. It is aimed at compost bags, can liners for organic waste, and shopping and retail bags that can be reused as compostable bags for organic waste. The resin boasts excellent melt strength for blown or cast film, as well as good toughness and tear strength; good barrier to moisture, oxygen, and odor; and good adhesion to other compostable polymers.

This new product provides properties very similar to the older Mvera B5002 grade for compost bags, which is being phased out. The new grade is said to be significantly easier to process—similar to standard LLDPE.
