WEB EXCLUSIVE: Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn., has reported two commercial applications in renal-care devices for a special grade of its proprietary Tritan copolyester that was developed specifically for this market. Tritan MX811 will be used in two models of OLpur hemodiafiltration filter housings from Nephros, Inc., River Edge, N.J., and in housings and caps for Smartflux dialyzers and neonatal blood filters from Medica S.p.A. in Italy. Both firms previously used PC for these products. Tritan reportedly provides not only a BPA-free alternative but also improved clarity and color stability after radiation sterilization. Tritan also eliminated the need for a separate annealing process to remove the residual stresses in PC. High flow of Tritan allows Nephros to use existing PC molds for the new filters.
