WEB EXCLUSIVE: SABIC Innovative Plastics, Pittsfield, Mass., has broadened its range of Geloy PC/ASA blends to address new markets. Originally developed for weatherable automotive applications, Geloy is now being tailored for healthcare, consumer electronics and electrical parts. These specialized grades offer nonhalogen flame retardance, exceptional low-temperature impact, and improved HDT.
For example, Geloy XTPMFR grades utilize SABIC’s Lexan EXL PC-silicone copolymer to contribute low-temperature ductility, improved flow/impact balance, and flame resistance. Such blends can be used in demanding outdoor electrical/electronic applications such as ATM machines, electrical enclosures, and security camera systems. XTPMFR15 and XTPMFR10 grades, made without halogenated additives, offer UL 94V-0 performance as thin as 1 mm. Geloy XTPM405 uses Lexan EXL to provide up to three times better impact strength at -30 C (-22 F) and five times better impact at 0°C/32 F than standard ASA alone.
Other newer blends are based on Geloy XTW resin, which provides improved initial colorabiity and up to five times better processing color stability than standard PC/ASA blends. It also provides much better weatherability than standard ASA.
