WEB EXCLUSIVE: Two kinds of sustainability characterize the latest circuit breakers, sockets, and switch bodies from Schneider Electric of France—non-halogen flame retardancy and use of a plastic derived from plant-based renewable resources. The material is Ultramid FRee Balance S3U40G5, the first application of BASF’s new Ultramid FRee non-halogen FR technology (showcased this month at K 2010) to its Ultramid Balance nylon 610 product line, which is 60% based on castor oil. Ultramid FRee products contain neither halogen nor red phosphorus, which permits formulation of light colors. BASF’s U.S. office for engineering plastics is in Wyandotte, Mich.
