WEB EXCLUSIVE: New high-temperature and highly reflective resins from two suppliers are engineered for growing LED markets in display backlighting and general lighting:
•DSM Engineering Plastics
of the Netherlands (U.S. office in Evansville, Ind.) has added a new grade of its unique nylon 4T for LED applications. Stanyl ForTii LED LX, is a high-flow, mineral-fillled grade whose excellent UV resistance is said to set a new standard for LED packages. Its high flow makes it suitable for use in high-cavitation tools. And its enhanced reflectivity reportedly has an immediate effect on the LED package light output and enables LED suppliers to improve their key specifications.
According to DSM, grade LED LX outperforms competitive PPAs. High reliability and LED lifetime are said to be enabled by the material’s excellent adhesion to silicone and epoxy encapsulation and to the metallic lead frame, avoiding chip degradation due to moisture or air diffusion through interfacial delamination.
, Florence, Ky., has developed a new generation of Thermx PCT (polycyclohexylene-dimethylene terephthalate) that is said to meet the challenging requirements of LED reflectors, especially for high-brightness, medium-power LEDs. Thermx LED 0201 and LED 0201S are fiber-filled, super-white PCT compounds. They reportedly withstand the demanding LED reflector requirements for heat and light stability, high initial reflectance, high reflectance stability, silicone adhesion, processability, surface-mount reflow soldering capability; and low moisture absorption. Thermx PCT reportedly provides better color and reflectance stability under heat and light than commonly used high-temperature nylons such as nylon9T and nylon6T. The two grades offer most of the same advantages with LED 0201S featuring higher ultimate elongation and impact strength.
