WEB EXCLUSIVE: Invista, Wichita, Kan., has expanded its range of Polyshield modified-PET barrier resins with a new masterbatch version. Aimed particularly at barrier PET beer bottles, Polyshield MB will reportedly allow converters and brewers around the world to increase their sourcing flexibility, as they will have more options to save on freight or duties.
Polyshield PET, which includes a compatibilizer and catalyst, is designed to be mixed in a blow molding machine barrel with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical’s MDX6 nylon. It has been proven as a monolayer option, with 15% greater CO2 barrier plus oxygen permeability of less than 1 ppm/yr. To manufacture monolayer beer containers, the masterbatch PolyShield solution is prepared by blending Polyshield barrier resin with standard PET and the required amount of nylon MXD6. This makes it possible to optimize the cost of the packaging versus the barrier performance needed to meet the shelf-life requirements of oxygen-sensitive food and beverages, including beer.
